Have you heard about Seed Cycling?

Seed cycling is all about incorporating different seeds(and oils) into the diet to support the natural ebb and flow of the different hormones throughout the menstrual cycle and help return them to a healthy balance.  If you are suffering from PMS, painful periods or irregular periods, then your hormones are out of balance. If the cycle is regular, Day 1 is the first day of the period; if it is not regular at all, or is absent, Day 1 should correspond to the New Moon.  While positive changes could be seen after one cycle, it typically takes 3-4 months for real changes, so stick with it and be consistent. Here’s how it’s done:

Day 1-14 – The follicular phase

Take the following daily:

1 tbsp ground flax seed(linseed)

1 tbsp ground pumpkin seeds

& fish oil supplement

Day 15-28 – The luteal phase

Take the following daily:

1 tbsp ground sunflower seeds

1 tbsp ground sesame seeds

& evening primrose oil

Seeds should be bought whole and ground up in a grinder, you can make up enough for a few days at a time.  The ground up seeds can be mixed into food or smoothies before serving, or sprinkled on foods.

How it works:

The seeds contain oils and minerals which support the manufacture and release of hormones in the body.  The flax and the pumpkin, as well as the fish oil support the oestrogen dominant part of the cycle. They are all rich in Omega 3 fatty acids which maintains healthy hormone receptor sites, which allows the hormones to carry out their function. The flax seeds also contain phytoestrogens called lignans which have antioxidant actions and which block excess oestrogenic activity in the body.  Sunflower seeds, sesame seeds and evening primrose oil all contain Omega 6 fatty acids which support the progesterone production side of the cycle.
